Camphill Village Trust, Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire:
rebuild, refurbishment and new extension to Therapy Building - completed 2010

Camphill Village Trust provides residential care for people with learning difficulties. The basis of their care is centred on the home where everyone’s share of responsibility to look after the house is found to be hugely beneficial to their well-being. This is extended into other activities at the Grange such as work in the farm, growing vegetables, baking bread, looking after the estate, gardening, pottery and woodwork.

The Therapy Building has trained staff who provide residents with care ranging from simple bathing (for those who find it difficult to do it themselves) to hair washing, oil baths, massage and eurythmy (a movement therapy).

The existing building has a roof structure which is propped in 2 places. We retained the whole building but took down all internal walls and replanned it, replacing all the windows. The reception now lies at the heart of the plan so that all rooms are close by. Walls are curvilinear in order to help the plan flow and gently bring walls back to the original window openings.

The eurythmy was relocated into a new building which is angled towards a long view over to the Severn estuary. It is timber frame, timber clad and has a timber shingled roof with recycled newspaper insulation. The slight rotation of the new building allowed us to form the entrance between the old and new buildings.
